Chronic insomnia can lead to poor health and a weakened immune function over time. Insomnia can be related to physical aches and pain, emotional stress, or psychological imbalance. In a recent study published by the Journal of Alternative and Complementary Medicine, the effectiveness of Auricular Acupuncture Treatment for Insomnia, was tested and showed significantly higher rates of recovery and improvement of insomnia with acupuncture then diazepam (Valium).

How Does Acupuncture For Insomnia Work?

Acupuncture treats insomnia by releasing endorphins and serotonin hormones within the brain to create a deep relaxing affect on the body. Neuro-imaging studies have shown that acupuncture calms areas of the brain that register pain or hyperactivity and activates those involved in rest and recuperation. Acupuncture remedies for insomnia include inserting needles into specific points to create a neurological response within the muscle tissue. This helps promote the free flow of Qi or Xue, which improves circulation and regulates chemicals produced within the brain. According to Chinese Medicine, insomnia can be from a source of deficiency or excess. An example of insomnia from deficiency would be when you feel very tired but can’t seem to fall asleep. Insomnia from excess would be when your mind is racing with thoughts. Many patients can experience both of these at different times in their life. Thankfully, Acupuncture and Chinese herbs can significantly improve sleep in both patterns.
