Common Symptoms of Improper Foot Mechanics

In a previous article describing the difference between proper and improper foot mechanics, we   introduced the terms “pronation” and “supination” referring to the two primary elements of proper foot function. We also described “overpronation” and “oversupination” referring to improper excesses of these two basic functions. In this article, we will examine some of the common physical symptoms that result from each of these two types of improper foot mechanics.

Symptoms of Overpronation

Overpronation is typically associated with low arches and “flat feet”. Other syndromes from which people with overpronation may suffer include:
  • heel spurs
  • inflammation and wear between the knee-cap and the knee joint
  • degenerative joints due to extra stress on joint

Symptoms of Oversupination

Oversupination is typically associated with high and abnormally rigid arches. Other syndromes from which people with oversupination may suffer include:

  • lateral knee pain
  • hip pain
