CHICAGO CHIROPRACTORS EXPLAIN CHIROPRACTIC
Although some forms of manipulations were being performed for hundreds of years, it was not until 1895 when Daniel David (D.D.) Palmer, with a successful natural healing practice in Iowa, delivered the first modern day spinal manipulation to an individual. D.D. Palmer developed theories and codified this technique creating a field of medicine which he termed chiropractic. The word “chiropractic” has its roots in the Greek words for “hand” and “action”, translating roughly to: “effective treatment by hand” – an apt description for what chiropractic is all about
WHAT IS CHIROPRACTIC ABOUT
Chiropractic is the branch of health-care founded on the fundamental belief that total health and wellness are in large part dependent upon the proper functioning of the body’s nervous system, and most particularly the spine and nerves extending from it. In the simplest of terms, chiropractors foster healing and promote wellness in patients by manipulating the body with their hands.
WHAT AREAS ARE MANIPULATED
Chiropractic treatment involves primarily the spine and/or related joints, but also involves the treatment of other joints in the body such as knees, shoulders, and ankles. In addition to the joints of the body, chiropractic treatment also involves tendons, ligaments and muscles.
THE CORE PRINCIPLES OF CHIROPRACTIC
* That all of the body’s functions are interconnected
* That the process of healing involves the whole body
* That a healthy spine and nervous system is fundamental to a healthy body
* That so long as the systems of the body are working in harmony together, then the human body is remarkably capable of healing itself and maintaining health and wellness.
WHY CHIROPRACTIC HELPS FIGHT ILLNESS AND DISEASE
As chiropractic views it, most illness and disease can be sourced to an inability of the body to adapt to the environment in which it lives. Your spinal column is made up of vertebrae that are stacked on top of each other with discs in between to prevent friction between the bones and absorb shock. In addition to providing central structure to our body, the spinal column also houses and protects our spinal cord. Our spinal cord is the vital link from our brain to every area of our body. Nerves come out from the spinal cord and through the vertebrae to all of our organs, muscles and other tissues, like our skin and eyes. Life circumstances from everyday stress and tension to accidents and falls can cause the spinal column or other parts of the musculoskeletal system to become deranged or displaced, irritating the roots of the nerves connected to or running through them. Such irritations can lead to pain, disease, and all sorts of other bodily malfunctions because your body isn’t getting all of the nerve impulses it needs from your brain to stay healthy.
HOW CHIROPRACTIC HELPS
Chiropractic, then, aims to locate the relevant musculoskeletal region(s) of the body not functioning properly and make the necessary adjustments, manually repositioning the joints accordingly, thereby facilitating the more efficient and comfortable functioning of all the body’s systems. Chiropractors will use traditional methods of diagnostic testing to identify the source of a problem, and they often provide counseling on nutrition, fitness, and other lifestyle issues affecting health and wellness. However, they choose not to prescribe any medications, nor do they perform any surgeries, both the domain of allopathic medicine.
Chiropractors use a non-invasive technique known as palpation (or manual detection) in combination with the careful application of manual pressure, vertebral and extremity joint manipulations, and massage to relieve irritation and pressure on the body’s nerves, restore mobility of the joints, and aid in the restoration of the body’s homeostasis (or systemic balance).
WHY SHOULD I SEE A CHIROPRACTOR
There are numerous reasons why a patient might visit a chiropractor for an adjustment, ranging from preventative wellness maintenance, to rehabilitative care to assistance relieving acute and chronic problems. Patients of chiropractic often find immediate and long-term relief from:
* Headaches
* Back Pain
* Joint Pain
* Sprains and Strains
* Carpal Tunnel Syndrome
* Tendonitis
* Sciatica
* And More!
DIFFERENT STYLES OF CHIROPRACTIC
Some chiropractors, practicing what is often called “straight” chiropractic, restrict their efforts to concentrating solely on adjusting the joints of the spine, however at Ravenswood Chiropractic & Wellness Center, we are what’s known as “mixer”, focusing on adjusting all the joints in the body, as needed.
